Plaschke: The Lakers who would acquire Kyrie Irving would be a great leader, a fool

Kyrie Irving Lakersisse?

Is this a joke?

The madness of NBA draft week began early Monday morning with the noise that the enigmatic Brooklyn Net guard and the Lakers have a mutual interest in adding Irving LeBron to James and Anthony Davis to create a new super team.

That would be great, very chaotic and very foolish.

The Lakers need Irving like another fragile body. The Lakers need Irving like another bad actor. The Lakers need Irving just like Russell Westbrook.

Irving is one of the best players… when he plays. He is one of the most connected performers in the league – if he does not give up. He may be a veteran leader if he does not act like a child.

He hit the winning streak in Game 7 to catch Cleveland’s 2016 NBA Championship. However, he later demanded an exchange because he did not want to share the square with James.

He was transferred to the Boston Celtics. Before his second season with them, he publicly announced that he wanted to sign the team again. He then ran to Brooklyn a month later to pair up with Kevin Durant, and after returning to Boston, he has trampled on the Celtics Central Square logo and postponed the killing of Boston fans.

He and Durant were to lead Nets to the NBA Championship. But in three seasons, Irving has played in just 103 of 226 possible games, while the Nets have won just one play-off series and lost twice.

Irving skipped games because he refused to be vaccinated with COVID-19, even though he knew New York law did not allow him to play at home. Irving skipped the games because he said he was protesting the uprising on January 6, 2021. He missed games due to various injuries.

Not only did he miss games, but he also put pressure on other players to skip games, as he was the strongest voice against continuing the NBA 2020 season in the Orlando area. In the end, he shouted at James, and the Lakers finally won their 17th title.

Irving is only 30 years old, but sometimes he looks and sounds as creaky as the “Uncle Drew” character he portrayed in commercials and movies.

His career has been so wildly eccentric, perhaps the most valid CV input is his famous public belief that the Earth is flat.

The Lakers have to ask themselves: is this the player who will not only be able to change the candidate for the lowest team championship title in the next two years, but also take it to the next era after James retires?

Then they must understand that the answer is a definite no.

If Irving refuses to give up Nets’ contract, become a free agent and take a historically large pay cut to come here for a one-year average waiver that would reduce his salary by at least $ 25 million. You can join Lakers through a transaction.

This trade would require expulsion from Westbrook – which is good – but also the first round of the 2027 and 2029 drafts, which is bad.

These draft options are Lakers’ only assets, hoping to attract future unfortunate stars to their team. Hi, Luka Doncic?

If the Lakers are going to give up these choices, it should be better for a young star who can secure them a title now or really carry them into the future. This is not Irving.

The whole riot around Irving and Lakers was undoubtedly made public, as Irving is trying to sign a four-year, $ 190 million contract with Nets. If you believe this is happening, then you believe that the Earth is flat.

Today, Irving is considered to be one of the most self-lost players in all professional sports, and that says something.

When he walked out of Nets in January 2021 because he was so upset by the rebellion, he was videotaped at the party.

Although he missed several games last season due to a vaccine mandate, he seemed to mock his teammates when he appeared on the podium.

The Lakers don’t need that. Their new coach Darvin Ham doesn’t need it. Their frustrated fans don’t need it.

They don’t have a championship team, but Irving has no plans to change it in the short term, and his presence would cause irreparable damage in the long run.

As has been written here before, they will have to endure mediocrity for many years if they do not agree to change James and start from scratch, and Irving can do nothing about it.

Over the past two seasons, Lakers fans have repeatedly asked, often out loud, in all sorts of public forums, “Can it get any worse?”

Get Kyrie Irving and find out.
