Rob Gronkowski, the narrow-minded Tampa Bay Buccaneers, calls it a career again.
Gronkowski, 33, announced his retirement on social media on Tuesday.
“I want to thank the whole Buccaneers first class organization for the amazing ride, trusting me to come back to play and help build the championship. Now I’m going back to my nursing home and head away from football again. I stepped in, everything I had, be it good or bad, “Gronkowski said in a statement.
“The friendships and relationships I have established will last forever, and I appreciate all my teammates and coaches for giving me everything they had. From retirement, back to football and another championship, and now back, thank you. to everyone. “
However, Gronkowski’s agent told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that he wouldn’t be surprised if Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady could retire his client a second time.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if Tom Brady calls him during the season to come back and Rob answers,” Drew Rosenhaus told Schefter. “It’s just my opinion, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Rob comes back during the season or next season.”
Gronkowski had ended his career in the New England Patriots after an injury in the 2018 season. The second round of the 2010 draft in Arizona largely rewards Brady for setting expectations for his career, and it was Brady who retired in 2020 to play for Bucs.
Although their personalities were vastly different – Gronkowski was playful, fun, and had never had a bad day with coaches or teammates; Brady, methodical and intense – they had a close relationship both on and off the field.
Gronkowski is the second main member of the Buccaneers attack, which retired this year, after Ali Marpet, who retired in February. Brady himself announced his retirement in February to retire 40 days later.
Gronkowski’s breakthrough year came in 2011, when he set the NFL record for most touchdowns at just under 17. A year earlier, Gronk unveiled a move that became known as his hallmark move, “Gronk Spike,” where he vigorously attacked the ball on the field after every hit he made.
In 2020, Gronkowski won four Super Bowls – three with the Patriots (XLIX, LI, LIII) and one with the Buccaneers (LV) – in a game where he got two touchdowns or “tuddies” as he liked to call them.
“Rob is a true professional who left it all on the field for the last two seasons and helped create a championship culture in our building,” Buccaneers CEO Jason Licht said in a statement. “He played a vital role in our 2020 Super Bowl LV championship season and fought several injuries last year on the way to one of the most productive yard races of his 11-year career. It’s always hard to see. A great player walks away from the game when he’s still He enjoys success, but the overwhelming emotions I feel today are thanks and respect for one of the biggest repellents who has ever played in the game, and although his achievements on the field are certainly important. his team-based approach to the game really determined his career. “
He was named First Team All-Pro in 2011, 2014, 2015 and 2017 and was selected for five Pro Bowls (2011, ’12, ’14, ’15 and ’17). He led the NFL in receiving touchdowns in 2011 and was named NFL Replayer of the Year in 2014. He was selected to the NFL Decade 2010 Team and the 100th Anniversary All-Time Team.
He leaves the game with the most touchdowne of his career after the end of the season (15) – and second only to Jerry Rice (22), the only recipient in every position. He also has the most 100-yard games in NFL history and the most TDs in a single season in league history (18 in 2011).
Gronkowski’s 92 touchdowns in his career rank 12th in NFL history and third after Antonio Gates (116) and Tony Gonzalez (111). He was the only one in the NFL history to make 1,000 yards and 10 plus touchdowns in three seasons (2011, ’14, ’15).
